Alex As Well is an honest story that deals with the themes of gender and sexuality. This difficult topic is discussed in an effective way, allowing the reader to gain an insight into the difficulties faced by people struggling with these issues. There are very few Young Adult novels out that explore this topic, so Alex As Well is a very unique novel.
I enjoyed the novel as it approached the topics of gender and sexuality in a humorous way, leaving the reader with a memorable portrayal of these issues. I liked that Brugman included the mother’s perspective to some of the events, as it gave me a chance to see how issues such as these can affect both child and parents.
I also liked how the character of Alex grew throughout the novel, and how she went from being quiet and passive to being strong and able to stand up for herself.
I would compare this novel to Perks of Being a Wallflower, in the way that it is a brutally honest reflection on a topic that is not often discussed.
I really enjoyed reading this novel and would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a truthful and humorous story.
